A Few Of My Favorite Things | Friday Faves

I’ve started a Friday Faves once before but I never stuck it out. So here I am trying again to to post a few of my favorite things. It’s no secret that I love to shop. I mean who doesn’t? And it’s not all glitz and glam either. Shopping just soothes my soul and getting home with lots of things to put away or having boxes arrive at your doorstop from online orders is just heaven.

This week’s list will be about a few of the things I’m using to simplify my life, whether it goes on my face, body or home… I hope you’ll be introduced to some new things and who knows? Maybe it will become one of your favorite things too. Continue reading “A Few Of My Favorite Things | Friday Faves”

New Year’s Resolution | Be Here, Not There.

Now that the New Year has rolled around we are eager to begin our “new life” with a different attitude. I’ve always written down New Year’s resolution or at least things I’d like to accomplish or start. I don’t take it too seriously which is most likely why I fail on completing the list in it’s entirety.

According to wikipedia: A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Home Organized

With the kids all out of school and running around creating chaos around the house we must put a plan together to keep the house organized during the summer break. My kiddo is not yet in school but I am certainly creating an atmosphere where I am able to keep my home clean and my son fed, clean and entertained.

When things are in order we think better and can be better utilize our time.

Yes I am one of those moms that has her house neat & tidy. I keep a journal of my to-do’s and try to follow it as much as possible. There are the occasional dirty dishes in the sink and toys around the living room as with any other home but it gets taken care of every day.

So how do I do it? I have a toddler running around at all times but I have a cleaning schedule to keep my home organized that I follow religiously.  I have days for certain types of laundry, days for certain areas of the house for cleaning and schedule bigger jobs throughout the month.

There’s no way to keep track of it all without tip number 1. I’d be lost without my bullet journal.

TIP 1: KEEP A LIST

The first tip is to write down all that needs to be cleaned.  Once you have written those down, separate them into similar tasks, then you can specify the days you will do each of those cleaning tasks.

It’s different for everyone and every home has different priorities. I don’t care much for toys during the day but I am a stickler for things being clean.

TIP 2: SCHEDULE, SCHEDULE, SCHEDULE

I’ve seen loads of photos of piles of laundry. I keep a laundry schedule that won’t allow our clothes to get so huge that I can’t keep up. I schedule most of my day and my laundry is definitely a biggie.

Laundry days are as follows : Mondays (Personal laundry : mine, hubs & kiddo), Thursdays (Personal laundry : mine, hubs & kiddo), Fridays (Towels, which are all white to make things easier when washing & bedding).

Putting clothes away are what’s most tedious for most people I would think, it certainly is for me. Usually If I don’t put it away as soon as they are dry, it gets some alone time in the basket. So it’s best to put it away quickly.

Fridays are also when I clean the bathrooms & kitchen.

TIP 3: STAY AWAY FROM PHONES/TV’S/COMPUTERS

This one is the toughest for me. I tend to be on social media all day and I see how much of a time drainer it is. What I have been doing is using Spotify on my phone (music app) and turning on some music while I’m doing chores do my mind doesn’t drift into never ending social media scrolling.

I vacuum every other day or as needed. We have carpet and the kiddo drops food everywhere. So it’s done often.

Since I keep the house organized & tidy throughout the week I don’t have to take so long cleaning up. It gets easier when you schedule it out.

Bonus TIP: DIVIDE & CONQUER

Big task get placed into days I don’t have so much to do.  I try to do it when I have the most energy, which is after breakfast. Things like wiping down blinds & windows are bigger jobs and things I do not enjoy doing but as a necessary evil I schedule their cleanings on days when the load is lighter.

My house is mostly clean at all times, but keep in mind I’m a home body and also schedule errands & events on similar days. You won’t find me going out every day unless to the playground (which happens to be across the street from our home).

My cleaning schedule might not be for everyone, it’s something that works for me and the amount of time I’m willing to put into keeping my house clean and organized. I don’t work outside of the home which gives me a more flexible cleaning schedule.

But keeping a list and organizing errands and to-dos is beneficial to any and everyone.

Hope this helps you in some way and if you have any more tips, please add them to the comments below. Keeping your home organized can be done with a little bit of planning.

Struggling to Find My Rhythm

I’ve been on a little summer break from writing on the blog. We’ve been traveling and I’ve lost my writing rhythm. I have a problem with starting things. Once I do start with a project and something goes wrong or I stop for whatever reason that project will most likely not come to fruition. Why is that? I don’t know. I guess that’s something weird about me. Mommy struggles people.

We were in Jacksonville at my parents house for a couple of weeks and once we’ve returned I’ve been focused on getting the house organized. We’re remodeling and updating the house we purchased back in the beginning of February. Slow & steady it’s coming along.  Our new appliances are in place and my kitchen is beginning to look like something I enjoy cooking in.

Then there’s the occasional “I have too much on my plate” days.

I just sit on the couch with the kiddo and watch cartoons with him. I’m in a total funk right now. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been so isolated from moving away to a new place.  I haven’t joined any class activities with my son. We haven’t decided on a church to attend or have gone to any to see if they fit our family (other than an open house for a new church that’s opening up soon).

Ultimately, I’ve been down a lot lately. I’m struggling to put myself out there. I’m in need of a village that’s not around and I simply don’t have the strength to search for one. Basically I’m digging myself a bigger hole of loneliness. There are days I have a burst of energy where I get lots done, my bullet journal has helped me through keeping track of my day to day activities. Sometimes I just don’t write in it for days at a time.

It’s not that I don’t want to write. I do! I’ve just had a lot on my mind. I’m being pulled in different directions and nothing gets written down. I have total scatter brain, some of it is still the effects of my miscarriage. Miscarriage, plus new city, no friends, and scatter brain are not a good combination.

I’ll have tons of ideas on what to write but I never get around to it. So today I decided to just let whatever is my head at this exact moment pour out of me so I can begin to feel some clarity. They said a brain dump is something you should do daily. I’m doing an emotional dump right now in the hopes it will get the writing/creative juices flowing again.

Thanks for sticking around & reading through my struggles. Have you gone through this or something similar? What did you do to get yourself out of the funk?

How to Entertain a Child for 30 Minutes

Being a stay at home mom has it’s perks, you don’t have to get dressed up, brush your hair or even brush your teeth if you don’t feel like it (although it’s highly recommended). You learn some tricks along the way in order to entertain your child to get certain things done (blogging, cleaning, calling your cable company) but doing those thing sometimes requires some silence of sorts. And if you have kids calling you every single minute while you are trying to do the aforementioned tasks, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!

I’m sharing several ideas on how to entertain you children for 30 minutes.

Okay, you can say.. That’s not a long time. Yea.. it’s not BUT and that’s a big BUT we are crafty ladies and we get things done when we don’t even have that. I’m going to share 4 items that have helped me entertain my child and I hope it helps you get some time to get whatever you need done, even if it’s a nap.

Outdoor entertainment

#1 – WATER PLAY

This is a winner at my house! It doesn’t require any fancy toy although sometimes it helps but if you have a hose and are willing to waste some water for your sanity and work to flow, then mama turn on that hose. (Make sure you don’t turn it up too strongly and it’s on the mist feature) This entertains my little guy (granted he’ll be 2.5 in a couple months) but it works wonders and he is also burning up some energy for later when it’s bedtime. WIN-WIN. Am I right or am I right? Buckets also work wonders. We also have one of those water play tables where you can put sand or whatever on one side and water in the other side. I have never used sand and just put water on both sides. He doesn’t know what it’s supposed to be. 🙂

#2 – WATERCOLORS/PAINTING/DRAWING

This could be done inside too but could potentially lead to screaming on my part. I prefer it being an outside play with my toddler. He tends to get messy and mess stays outside, unless he’s sitting right next to me. I have a large spiral bound sketchpad from a previously failed attempt at drawing, which now has purpose “his fabulous masterpieces” for his mother. We use these to color at my house, which you can find a full on review on this blog. I highly recommend them.

indoor entertainment- Great for those rainy days

#3 – PLAYDOH

Oh goodness. I took a while to introduce water play tables to my son and I have no clue why, maybe I thought he would eat it I suppose. But goodness. He can sit still on his little ikea table (that’s the only place I allow him to play with it. Don’t judge me, I don’t want too much of a mess). The table is in his room but I bring it out to the middle of our living room when I have a deadline or just need him to be entertained while I get some cleaning done. This one is also great for those rainy days, which as I write is happening right now. But he’s napping so we’ll use water play tables later cause I still have a lot of to do!

#4 – TV/IPAD

This one is not my favorite, and I held off on him watching TV for the longest time. But once he sees me bring out the water play tables, he is elated! I think that is his favorite thing outside of chocolate (he’ll do anything for chocolate, but don’t we all? HAHA) I think my son thinks he’s been rewarded when I hand him the iPad. He also loves to watch Cars and just recently got hooked on watching Jonah (VeggieTales) on amazon video.

Here’s wishing you a good luck mom or dad on entertaining your sweet angels! If you have some more ways to entertain your child please do so in the comments below! We very much need ideas.

5 Sure Fire Ways to get More Organized Now

ways to organize your home life organizatin tips

Hey Lovelies ♥ Happy Monday! I’ve been on a mission to get things done and organized. With Spring Cleaning happening in most homes right now I thought I would write about what changes I’m making to my daily life and hopefully it will help you as well.

I had a set bedtime of 10:00 p.m. every night because I just needed to sleep after becoming a mom but as of this past week I’ve totally put that to bed (hehehe) and decided that I will power through and get things done.

Growing up I used to say “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” to a lot of people.

Well it totally has come back to bite me in the ass big time. After becoming a mom being tired is a state of being. I actually just purchased a shirt that says that on it (Because I’m tired).  So because I’m on an organizational spree I decided to share with you all what has been helping me get organized.

TIP # 1: MORNING POW-WOW

Your morning pow-wow with yourself could also be done before bedtime a “bed-wow”? LOL, but getting up in the morning and taking account of all you have to accomplish for the day is important to a successfully planned and organized day. Don’t have a calendar/bullet journal/notebook? GET ONE please. Figure out what’s for dinner (I highly recommend a weekly meal planning chart) Look over your calendar (in my case, my bullet journal, which you can read about here), which takes me to tip #2.

book  TIP # 2: EAT THAT FROG

It’s popular belief that Mark Twain said “Eat a live frog the first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” Although a Frenchman Nicolas Chamfort, is the one who originally coined the phrase; it has been accredited to Mr. Twain, there’s even a book called EAT THAT FROG, (if you want to read it) but no matter who came up with it’s good. I’ve been taking to heart and have been successful at finishing up tasks I was dreading on doing because I totally felt proud after completing them. I was literally getting a star sticker (Adults should get stickers too!)

TIP # 3: TIME MANAGEMENT

I choose my most important task of the day during my sons nap-time. Writing blog posts, replying to important e-mails, phone calls all fall under this category. Give yourself realistic time slots to get things accomplished.

TIP # 4 FOCUS!

I know we have a million and one things to do during the day but by focusing on the tasks we have to do, we manage not to get distracted by the TV, our phones, etc…If you are anything like me, my mind is going at 10 different directions at any given time.

So close those open tabs on your computer if you have to do something online. I find this helpful especially when I am writing a blog post. I find as I’m typing ideas start flowing and I sometimes manage to let my mind start to wander. (I so have tabs open right now, closing in 1-2-3..done). Face the screen of your cellphone down and on silent when you have something important to do, keeps the distractions at bay.

TIP # 5 LABELS, BINS & THINGS

I just purchased some new drawer organizers for my bathroom and kitchen. After putting everything in it’s place; the sheer look of joy on my face should have been worthy of a selfie. If you have things cluttered when you are trying to get things done, you will get side-tracked. If it doesn’t belong anywhere in your home, it needs to go (i.e. Trash/donation). Clutter will get in your way so do yourself a favor and give things a home or a temporary bin for either re-homing or trash.

Pantry, I’m coming to you next. WATCH OUT!

Well, that’s all folks. I really hope you enjoyed reading this post and you got excited about getting organized. It sure helped me even more. I’m fired up to clean my kitchen right now. How about you? What are some of your best organizing tips? Share with me in the comments below. I would love to know what works for you. Incorporating new organizational tips ours lives can only benefit us.

Thank you so much for reading, till next time.

Stay in Your Pajamas, It’s Okay.

Maybe you’re a wake up in the morning, shower, shave, put on make up, coffee and off you go kinda mom.

But I AM NOT! A good day is when I actually get out of my pajamas and have underwear on.

Sometimes this happens early on, and sometimes it’s around 2 pm. If that. I mean, why change? It’s the same every day.

Out of that first phrase the only constant is the COFFEE.

Are you with me?
Who needs pants anyways? or underwear for that matter.

I don’t have it all together and if you do you’re lying to yourself or you’re about to break down with all of the things you are trying to accomplish or maybe you are a superhero and you can’t tell anyone.

Mom, it’s okay.. Chill out! Stay in your PJ’s, leave that laundry basket (which BTW, the clothes I neatly folded last night and put in the basket, my son casually walked up to it and turned it all upside down. You bet your ass I just picked it up and just put it all back in however way it fell out.) And that’s alright too.

There isn’t a laundry police. Is there? I hope not.

I’m feeling all kinds of funny today, maybe it’s because my child decided he didn’t want to nap yesterday at his regularly scheduled time and went to sleep around 1 pm instead of 9:30/10 am, which drove me bananas. I finally woke him up around 3:50 pm or else this kid was never gonna fall asleep at bedtime. WHICH HE DIDN’T.

He went to bed around 9:50 PM //  Big NO-NO.

To add to the loveliness of his new schedule, he decides 6 AM is a great time to be up and running. So forgive me if I’m not exactly Mrs. Happiness. I sound a little distraught no? Well, this was how my Monday & Tuesday morning was.

Thankfully last night, he went to bed at a decent time. I went to bed at a decent time and he woke up at his normal 7ish AM. You can’t begin to understand how great it feels to have normal, predictable sleeping patterns.

How about you? Has your days been crazy? What do you do to keep sane? Let me know in the comments below.

Big Things are Coming Up | Preparation Mode ON

ellen oliveira

When I first started writing, it was a way of letting go of some steam from the hard work that is motherhood.  As I continued, I got more and more into it.  The technical and social aspects.  But it’s work.  So I’ll be still writing but I won’t put the stress of writing 3 times a week like I have been imposing on myself.

Life happens. Things change.  Baby goes through changes, you sleep less, get less house work done and writing about it seems more like a chore than letting off steam.

I will continue to write. I’ve always loved to read and write and love to share the daily happenings of my life.  I hope to inspire some of you to become mothers.  And root the ones that are mothers already and feel the pain of motherhood and the weight of it. I’m spreading myself thinly lately and mama needs a breather.

We are all in this together. I hope to help you with a virtual shoulder to cry upon or share a great experience you’ve had.

I’m glad I have you all to listen to my ramblings and enjoy everyone of your comments.

Big things are coming up

  • Thanksgiving is just around the corner
    • Hosting the family this year, around 25+ people coming! Lots of food, lots of fun and lots of mess!!! Nerve-wrecking but exciting none the less.
  • Christmas
    • It’s Nicolas’ first Christmas, I’m beyond pumped to get things rolling.
  • New Years
    • Okay, let’s just say I’m excited for everything!!!
  • My son’s first birthday!!
    • Need I say more? Cue in the party for the parents! Come on, he’ll love the photos when he’s older.  It won’t be a huge party, but it will be special.

I hope to share a little bit of some decoration inspiration and some yummy recipes.

Thanks for stopping in! Have a great week and I hope to hear from you all.
