DIY Birthday Cake Topper

Okay, I know it’s been over a year since I did my son’s vintage airplane birthday party and I promised to share some of the DIY’s I did for his birthday party.

Year one has passed and even birthday TWO has passed and NADA.  So Sorry!! But now that we are in our new home for good, I’m getting all of my crafts and supplies organized and will be sharing how I made his birthday cake topper.

Super easy craft.  Enjoy!

I’ve linked below where you can find the different items I used according to his party’s color scheme but you can change those accordingly.

Making a DIY Birthday Cake Topper

What you’ll need:

  • Glitter Card-stock
  • Scissors
  • Name, age or theme template
  • Baker’s Twine (Red or color of choice)
  • Bamboo Skewers
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Mini Clothespins

Directions:

♦ First ,create a template with the desired font & size (something bold and thick) on Microsoft word or Canva. I had to try a few different sizes before I got to what I liked. Be sure to give yourself ample space between each character so you can cut them out without bumping into the other letter by mistake.

♦ Next, trace the letters or numbers in the back of the card-stock you’ll be using, then cut using very sharp scissors for precision.

♦ Heat up your glue gun and grab your twine.  Glue the back of the letters you just cut out to the twine (on top of the letters) and cut the twine to the desired length.

♦ Grab the bamboo skewers and tie the ends of the twine.  You can cut the extra twine after it’s tied.

♦ Add decorative glitter clothespins to the end

That’s all! Now you’ve made yourself your own cake topper!

I hope you found this easy and give this birthday cake topper DIY a try at your next party.

If you do, post on Instagram with the hashtag #YLMcaketopper.  I would love to see what you come up with. The possibilities are truly endless.
